Lakelaw: We Fight Predatory Lending and Mortgage Rescue Scams
In a certain sense, many of the foreclosures that have recently begun to plague our nation's homeowners could have been prevented. At Lakelaw, we foresaw this crisis years ago when predatory lenders started committing mortgage fraud and giving out unfair adjustable rate mortgage loans to subprime borrowers who would not be able to repay them. Even worse, there are many scam-artists who will search for people in foreclosure and try to persuade them to deed their houses away in order to save them from creditors. DO NOT DO THIS! CALL US AT ONCE! And call your local District Attorney.

Since 2003, we have been studying strategies for turning the tables on predatory lenders. Since then, many homes have been lost in Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings by debtors who assumed that foreclosure is inevitable. But foreclosure is not inevitable. We will always look at all of your mortgage refinancing papers at no additional cost to you. We do not think that this is standard practice among bankruptcy attorneys, but we think that it should be.
Do you have a mortgage? Did you recently refinance? Are you facing foreclosure because you could not keep up with high-interest rates and service fees? If so, your foreclosure might not be your fault, and we might be able to help. Please bring us the mortgage refinancing papers you received just as you got them at the closing.
There are a number of different laws in place to make sure lenders do not take advantage of borrowers who do not understand their rights, including:
- Truth in Lending Act
- Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA)
- Home Owner's Equity Protection Act (HOEPA)
Using these laws, we may be able to help you keep your home from getting foreclosed, renegotiate a mortgage agreement and even recover money that was taken from you in the form of unfair interest.
Leaders in the Fight Against Predatory Lending
Lakelaw is among the first firms in Wisconsin to start fighting back against predatory lending, particularly in the context of bankruptcy, and we have begun teaching other attorneys how to do the same. With enough like-minded consumer protection advocates behind us, we hope that our efforts will help bring about a major shift in the way judges view these cases and laws.
